What to Expect

THE PROCESS:

Obtaining your LTC is a process that can be daughnting to some but A Good Guy With A Gun is here to help.

  • Once you are committed to getting your Texas LTC, complete the application. This will expedite your process because the State will have an application to attach all the information they require. It will take 24-48 hours for the application to be recognized once submitted so the other information (fingerprints, LTC-100, other requested documents) can attach.
  • Schedule and do your fingerprints
  • Find a LTC class, Adam suggests A Good Guy With A Gun, LLC
  • Submit the LTC-100 to the State of Texas that is obtained after successful completion of the LTC course
  • Wait, wait, wait, wait, for up to 60 days for your LTC to show up in the mail

THE LICENSE TO CARRY COURSE:

The license to carry course is conducted in two parts, the classroom portion and the proficiency portion(firing range).

  • Expect the classroom portion to take a minimum of 4 hours and a maximum of 6 hours by state mandate in these four subjects:
    • Laws that relate to weapons and the use of deadly force
    • Hangun use and safety, including use of holsters
    • Non-violent dispute resolution
    • Proper storage practices for handguns
  • Proficiency should take no longer than 2 hours with a large class provided you as the student qualify on the first attempt, this time is not included in the 4-6 hours classroom instruction

PROFICIENCY:

A passing score is 70% or 175 points on the B-27 target below which is scored in 0,3,4,or5 points per fired round. Zero points are awarded for non-fired rounds and missed rounds.

The course of fire is mandated by The State of Texas, it is shot in three stages from the 3 yard line, 7 yard line, and 15 yard line. A total of 50 rounds will be used.

There is no time allotted for practice or to adjust sights in the License To Carry Course.

WHAT TO BRING:

  • A semi-automatic or non semi-automatic handgun (LEAVE HANDGUN IN VEHICLE UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO RANGE AREA)
    • must be at least .22 caliber
    • must be in good working order
    • no optical sights allowed
    • no handgun may have any modification which compromises the safety of the weapon
    • revolvers must not have “push off” on single action
    • HANDGUNS AND AMMUNITION WILL BE INSPECTED PRIOR TO TRAINING AT THE RANGE
  • Ammunition
    • reloads are not allowed
    • student must provide new in box ammunition
    • must have a minimum of 50 rounds (100 rounds is recommended if you are in a re-shoot situation)
  • Protective Equipment
    • ear protection, over the ear muff style is required, NO EAR PLUGS of anykind
      • limited rental sets are available for $5
    • eye protection, wrap around sunglasses and prescription eyewear is acceptable
      • limited rental sets are available for $2
    • shirts with a collar
    • hats are recommended
    • closed-toe footwear such as boots or athletic shoes
    • long pants, no shorts or capri style pants
  • Additional Items
    • one hand towel to lay firearm at rest and ammunition on during qualification-NO HOLSTERS WILL BE UTILIZED
    • Pen for note and test taking
